Introduction: What
is Procrastination
We all procrastinate from time to time. In simple words, procrastination means – to
delay or postpone action. Understanding
procrastination and taking helpful steps to overcome it are very important. You may be familiar with the phrase “just do
it” and ultimately that is what needs to happen to stop your procrastination. As a student, the sooner you get rid of
procrastination, the better. You keep on
postponing your studies and when exam knocks at your door, you become alert and
sit for hours to study, that too with so many distractions, frustrations,
disturbances, and fearfulness that ultimately what left to you to do is to
curse yourself. Procrastination kills
any hopes of reaching a goal. So, the
best way to get back on track is to start treating procrastination as your
enemy.
Consequences of
Procrastination
1. Procrastination
adds unnecessary stress and anxiety to your life.
2. Procrastination
causes you to have low energy, low motivation, and low self-esteem.
3. Procrastination
prevents you from reaching your goals.
4. Procrastination
makes you feel guilty and weighs you down.
5. Procrastinators
are often called lazy and irresponsible.
Steps to
Overcome Procrastination
You can follow the following steps to
overcome procrastination.
1. The
first and foremost step to get rid of procrastination is being very clear about
what needs to be done. We all have a “To
Do list” and sticking to it is the trick.
Never allow any distractions or other things come between you and your “To
Do list” of works. Schedule your time
accordingly so that you may have ample time to do your work more efficiently. If you are a student, reserve two hours in
the morning and two hours (you may increase or decrease the amount of time you
need per your choice) in the evening only for studying and never allow anything
to disturb you during these periods of time.
Follow a rigorous, “never-miss” approach and success will be yours.
2. Try
to figure out why you procrastinate. One
of the main reasons for procrastination is that people find a particular job very
unpleasant and try to avoid it because of that.
Think of all the positive things that will happen when you do the task. Do some introspection, try to find out why
you procrastinate, and then set a purpose that will help activate your brain. When you have a clear purpose, your brain
searches for all the references and ideas it can that will help you accomplish your
purpose. If we determine the reasons for
our procrastination, we can move more easily from paralysis to action.
3. Try
to enjoy your studies as much as possible.
If you are not able to concentrate on your studies, then procrastination
takes place, and as a result, you never score good marks. You need to fall in love with your studies. Reading should be fun filled and you should
not see it as a boring task.
4. Strong
determination and will power can eliminate procrastination. Unbelievable success has been achieved by
many great personalities because of their strong determination and will power towards
a goal. So, have faith in yourself,
believe in yourself, motivate yourself as much as you can to finish your work and
never see yourself as a weak or lazy person, and your strong determination will
take you to your destination.
5. Many
people procrastinate because of mental fatigue and tiredness and they keep on
postponing their tasks no matter how important they are. A lazy mind is an unhappy mind. So, do some physical exercise and meditation,
eat healthy and drink plenty of water to keep yourself fit and focused. Take 5- to 10-minute active breaks in between
your studies.
6. Limit your social media engagement. Do not let Twitter, Facebook, etc., get in the way of your studies. Frequent social networking visits and Internet browsing habits can make your procrastination habits worse. Distractions from social media come in many forms and can seriously impact your time.
